Before the war, large numbers of Japanese men immigrated to the Philippines, married the local women there, and started families. Yet when Japan and the U.S. went to war, children who lost their Japanese fathers in the battles were deemed "stateless" and forced to conceal their identities. Today, the children are mostly in their 80s and 90s and are finally allowed to reclaim their Japanese identities. Yet they face many challenges gathering the necessary "evidence" to prove their parentage.
