Children who were given away by their biological parents are referred to as “placed children”. In the Alpine regions of Austria, this was a common practice in the last century until the early 1960s. Poor farming families and unmarried mothers were separated from their youngest children. The young children were taken to wealthier farms, where they were given board and lodging but had to work .
