Jim is an American/Australian with a very unusual background. While born, raised, and educated in the United States, Jim ventured off-shore more than 30 years ago to forge his career globally. Jim has worked in North America (New York and Chicago), Europe (Warsaw and Milan), Australasia (Sydney and Auckland), and the United Kingdom (London).
From January 2019 until July 2023, Jim was Chairman of BBDO Europe based in London. In this role, Jim was responsible for all BBDO and related companies across Europe comprising 35 + companies in 20 + markets.
Prior to his move to the United Kingdom, Jim spent 19 years in Australasia, most recently as Chairman of Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, Chairman of Colenso BBDO, and CEO of Clemenger Group New Zealand. He started his career in 1999 with the Clemenger Group as Managing Director/CEO, Clemenger BBDO Sydney. Following Sydney, he was the CEO of Clemenger Group New Zealand. Then in 2014, Jim relocated to Melbourne to take on the Chairman role of Clemenger BBDO Melbourne while keeping his New Zealand responsibilities.
Jim began his career with BBDO in Europe, first as Managing Director, BBDO Warsaw. After 4 years in Warsaw, he moved to Italy overseeing the merger of BBDO Italy with the high-powered creative hot shop D’Adda Lorenzini Vigorelli forming DLV BBDO.
Jim has only worked for one other company, DMB&B, in the US and Europe: DMB&B Chicago, New York, and Warsaw. He has a long and established reputation and career in re-engineering agencies and businesses achieving great success creatively, diversifying offers, and growing business.
Outside of BBDO, Jim has been active in the visual and performing arts. He was a Director of NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art), Australia’s premier drama and theatre University from 2007 to 2013. He served as a trustee on the Auckland Arts Festival from 2011 until 2018 and served as a Board member of the Melbourne International Arts Festival since 2015. He and his partner, Brenda Tocher, are avid art collectors.
